"We have a growing supply of highly qualified retirees and older workers who would like to use a lifetime’s worth of skills."

Chicago, Illinois (PRWEB) April 01, 2013

When older professionals aren't ready to hang it up, real estate appraisal could be the ideal part-time job, according to Chicago real estate expert and entrepreneur Michael Hobbs.

“The leading edge of the baby boom generation, which has 81 million members, began turning 65 last year,” said Hobbs. “And many either won’t want to retire completely, or won’t be able to afford not working. They’ll be looking for part-time positions that use their professional experience – and property appraisal is a good fit. Those boomers who have retired from professional careers can stay active, engaged and involved with the real estate industry as appraisers, without having to work a full-time schedule.”

Hobbs pointed to the findings of a member survey by AARP, which found that while half of all AARP members are retired, two-fifths (40 percent) are still working. The same percentage are concerned (extremely/very) about having employment opportunities in their community.

AARP also asked members about their level of interest in a variety of work-related areas. Members are interested (either extremely or very interested) in learning about jobs where their skills would be applicable (19 percent), gaining new job-related skills or experiences (17 percent), and starting a new job or career (11 percent).

“Property appraisal should be a strong consideration for those AARP members,” said Hobbs, “because it answers all their concerns: It’s work they can do in their communities, using professional skills they acquired, as well as giving them an opportunity to learn new skills."

"We have a growing supply of highly qualified retirees and older workers who would like to use a lifetime’s worth of skills," Hobbs said. "Many are not satisfied with traditional volunteering. They don't want to lick envelopes, but they miss the hustle and bustle of a workplace."

By placing them in part-time jobs that can use their expertise, the real estate industry can give retirees an opportunity to go out there again and get engaged in the economy.
