Metalogix, the leading provider of content infrastructure software to improve the use and performance of enterprise content on Microsoft SharePoint, Exchange and Cloud platforms, today announced the availability of the BLOBulator via Metalogix.com. This easy to use, free tool quickly analyzes the amount of Binary Large Objects (BLOBs) occupying vital storage space in the SQL Server database for SharePoint. Customers can use the results of this analysis to understand performance risks and assist in implementing strategies for improved storage tiering, content database configurations and backup strategies.
The average amount of content stored and accessed through SharePoint is growing by 75 percent annually with more than half of organizations reporting farms that exceed 1 terabyte in size. This staggering growth has been stimulated by BLOBs, which are the content files like Microsoft Office documents, PDF files, audio and video files that conspire to slow down the performance of SharePoint. As more BLOBs are added to your SharePoint content database, business users experience performance bottlenecks such as slow upload/download times. Administrators have to provision expensive Tier 1 storage and cope with lengthy backups. By downloading the BLOBulator tool, an administrator can find out how much space is being taken up by BLOBs and determine if externalizing BLOBs will improve performance, reduce storage costs and speed up backups.
“The broadening user adoption and mission-critical nature of the content deployed under SharePoint is driving unpredictable, explosive content database growth in SharePoint implementations,” said Steven Murphy, CEO, Metalogix. “When we poll our 7,500 customers, our SharePoint administrators, database administrators and storage architects rank managing this growth as one of their top management challenges. We are providing our BLOBulator tool for free to give IT professionals an easy way to survey their content databases and uncover the best practices to reduce the cost of SharePoint storage and manage the risks related to this mission-critical growth.”
The Metalogix BLOBulator tool provides a health check for SharePoint content databases and provide the knowledge to take action. After running BLOBulator on a single SharePoint server deployment or a farm, simply pick the database to analyze and click start. The tool will then calculate the size of each SQL database and the percentage of BLOB content in each database. If the database size is large and BLOBs constitute more than 50% of any database, SharePoint is likely experiencing performance bottlenecks and costing too much for Tier 1 storage.
BLOBulator includes resources that can help create storage strategies such as using a Remote BLOB Storage (RBS) solution, like the market-leading Metalogix StoragePoint, to alleviate those issues. StoragePoint externalizes SharePoint content to slash storage cost, boost speed and simplify backup. The product moves the BLOBs outside of SQL Server on to affordable external storage tiers, including SAN, NAS or the Cloud.
