The Color Run™, a popular, nationwide series of urban 5K races in which thousands of participants are doused from head to toe in different colors at each kilometer, is making headway on the growing national focus of improving health and wellness.
While The Color Run event is all about fun and positive energy, the 5k also focuses on promoting healthy living. Over 60% of Color Runners are first-time 5k runners. Many Color Runners’ participate as a celebration and capstone of their healthy living accomplishments – like Alyssa from Milwaukee. Alyssa was considered an obese child most of her life, but at 14 she was ready to make a change. With her mom Leslie following right behind her, Alyssa has lost 62 pounds since January of this year and is now on her high school cross-country team – running 3 miles a day, 6 days a week. She is aspiring to be a personal trainer and wants to help other obese children and adults someday. Leslie and Alyssa ran The Color Run in Milwaukee this year as the culmination of their hard work and new lives.
Leslie writes, “So The Color Run is more than color, more than fun – it’s a measure of where we have come, and God’s grace and goodness in our lives.”
This weekend, The Color Run event was featured on Nickelodeon’s Worldwide Day of Play, an initiative to motivate youth to get out and be active. Nickelodeon aired a segment at the end of the day Saturday that showed how kids celebrated around the country, featuring Nickelodeon stars and celebrities, including the First Lady. The Color Run event was a major highlight of the segment, and showed kids’ participation and thoughts on the 5k.
One child comments, “I play because it’s healthy and fun; especially when you’re running through color!”
Another remarked, “I’ve never run before, but I’m excited about The Color Run because we get to get color splashed on us and it’s so much fun.”
In addition, The Color Run 5k had over 50,000 participants in 4 different cities this weekend. Color Runners in Cincinnati, Lawrence, Tuscaloosa, and Des Moines celebrated living healthier, completing a 5k in a fun and unique way.
As a final capstone to the success of the weekend, The Color Run representatives met with celebrity Nick Cannon to discuss a possible collaboration with the Cannon Youth Foundation to help encourage youth to be happy and healthy worldwide.
With no winners or official times, The Color Run celebrates healthiness, happiness, and individuality, bringing the community together to create a five-kilometer canvas of colorful fun. Participation in and buzz for The Color Run have exploded since its debut last year with nearly a half-million "likes" on Facebook. Due to popular demand, The Color Run is expected to hold more than 50 events nationally in 2013 with additional events to be introduced worldwide.
“We call The Color Run the ‘happiest 5K on the planet’ because our events bring together friends and family in a unique, healthy, and fun environment,” said Travis Snyder, founder of The Color Run. “Our only rules are that people wear white and prepare to be covered in color at the finish!”
Pacing The Color Run event is the 2013 Chevrolet Spark, the Official Ride of The Color Run™ and Chevrolet’s first mini car for the U.S. and Canadian markets. The specially designed Chevrolet Spark will feature a multicolor paint scheme over a white base that replicates the look of a color-saturated runner at the finish line. The theme continues inside with splashes of bright color throughout an already-color-coordinated interior.

Nickelodeon celebrated its Worldwide Day of Play last Saturday, October 6th. The initiative promotes healthy living by going off the air on the designated day to encourage viewers to go outside and play. This year, Nickelodeon debuted a new special titled, “I Play Because” that focused on how kids celebrated the Worldwide Day of Play around the nation. The special was hosted by Nickelodeon stars and several celebrities, including: Michelle Obama, David Beckham, and Apolo Ohno. The Color Run event was highlighted.
