Our residents place a great deal of focus on their physical well-being.

Older adults can become fit at any age and reap the benefits, according to an article in the September issue of "Vi Living," the publication for residents of Vi, a developer, owner and operator of older adult living communities.
“Regular exercise has been shown to provide a myriad of benefits in older adults including improvements in cardiovascular, metabolic, endocrine and psychologic health,” says the article, citing a report in American Family Physician. “It’s never to late for older adults to benefit from physical activity.”
This is why fitness activities are such an important part of a Vi community’s comprehensive lifestyle program. From yoga to low-impact chair exercises, as well as fitness centers and pool, the choices are endless and come in many forms.
For example, Vi at Bentley Village in Naples, FL, recently celebrated Senior Health and Fitness Day by encouraging residents to experience kayaking on one of their lakes.
“One resident who just turned 90 couldn’t get in the kayak fast enough,” says Lifestyle Director Siobhan Mangan in the article. “We also encouraged residents to try scuba diving.”
“Our residents place a great deal of focus on their physical well-being. It’s not uncommon for them to be playing golf or tennis in the morning and swimming or visiting the fitness center in the afternoon,” Mangan says. “We do have a ‘Three O’Clock Club,’ which is a group of residents who work out together each afternoon. A resident recently told me, ‘young people think of fitness as a way to stay fit, we think of it as a way to stay healthy,’” Mangan adds.
At Vi, residents are offered services and care with an approach grounded in whole-person wellness. Whole-person wellness is a concept developed through long-range studies that examine successful aging. There are multiple dimensions to whole-person wellness, including physical, emotional, social, spiritual, intellectual and vocational.
Vi continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) offer independent living with a combination of a private residence, services, amenities and care (for example, assisted living, memory support care and skilled nursing care).
Late last year, Vi commissioned a report by Ken Dychtwald Ph.D., renowned gerontologist, psychologist, best-selling author, and CEO of Age Wave that challenges the “prevailing myths and misperceptions” about CCRC living. The report, “The Five Myths and Realities of Continuing Care Retirement Communities,” is available in its entirety at http://www.ViLiving.com.
