Over 100,000 Americans die every year from obesity. The WLSFA save lives one grant at a time.
Louisville, Kentucky (PRWEB) March 16, 2013
Louisville native Jackie Jackson had weight loss surgery on March 11, 2013 with Dr. John S. Oldham at Baptist Health Louisville, funded by a grant from the Weight Loss Surgery Foundation of America.
The Weight Loss Surgery Foundation of America, also known as WLSFA.ORG, funds grants for weight loss and reconstructive surgery. Jackie Jackson was referred to the WLSFA’s grant program by her surgeon, John Oldham, MD, when her insurance denied coverage for medical treatments for morbid obesity.
“We are thrilled that we were able to fund our first grant in Kentucky and Ms. Jackson received the medical treatment she had been seeking for many years” stated Antonia Namnath, founder of WLSFA.org.
Ms. Jackson’s grant application was approved by the WLSFA as part of their Grant Referral Program that reviews applications every six months. Less than 1% percent of morbidly obese people have weight loss surgery and a very small percentage of those patients have their surgery covered by insurance. The WLSFA helps people like Ms. Jackson who do not have the financial means or insurance to fund their own surgery.
Dr. Oldham's services were made possible by the WLSFA grant program. In addition, Baptist Health contributed to Ms. Jackson’s grant by reducing fees for lab work and testing, nutritional screenings and program fees.
“I am so very happy for Jackie,” said Karen Barnett Sparks, Bariatric program coordinator for Baptist Health Louisville. “She is dedicated, positive and very inspirational. Jackie has been faithful in coming to every monthly (weight loss surgery) support group meeting, and dogged in her pursuit of having weight loss surgery. She is a highly-motivated woman.”
Along with her medical treatment, Jackie Jackson will receive a year’s worth of Bariatric vitamin supplements from Wellesse. Wellesse Marketing Manager Leslie Ellis stated, “Wellesse is honored to supply grant recipient Jackie Jackson with a one-year supply of Liquid Supplements to assist her on her weight-loss journey. Supplementation after surgery is essential to meet nutritional requirements and fast absorbing Wellesse Supplements are an easy, great tasting way to achieve this. Wellesse is a proud supporter of the WLSFA and the fight against obesity. For over 25 years. Wellesse has been committed to producing a premium line of liquid nutritional supplements that make it easier to live a healthier, more active life.”
The WLSFA is a 501 C 3 Charitable organization powered by donations from thousands of weight loss surgery patients, medical professionals, and industry partners. The WLSFA's core mission is funding grants for surgery. Carnie Wilson became the WLSFA.org National Ambassador of Hope in January of 2013. The WLSFA is raising awareness for the medical treatment of obesity and the lack of insurance coverage available in the United States today.
Carnie Wilson understands the disease of obesity. "As a weight loss surgery patient. I am honored to help the WLSFA raise funds and awareness. Jackie Jackson will benefit from her surgery along with the support of the weight loss surgery patient community. I invite you to support our cause and join me in May at our annual fundraising event and community conference to fund more grants in the future." said Carnie Wilson.
