Yakima, WA (PRWEB) October 04, 2012
Yakima car accident lawyer Mariano Morales Jr. said today that Washington state drivers deserve congratulations for a marked reduction in the number of motor vehicle accidents, but he agrees with State Patrol Chief John R. Batiste that even better performance is in the hands of those behind the wheel.
The Washington Traffic Safety Commission reported recently that fewer Washington drivers are getting into car wrecks than at any time in the past decade. Fewer than 99,000 collisions occurred in 2011, down from 2010 and the peak in 2005, which saw more than 123,000 collisions cause thousands of personal injuries and deaths.
Darrin Grondel, director of the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, said, “Drivers get the lion’s share of credit for this improvement.”
Chief Batiste said the responsibility for further improvements in the state’s accident rate likewise lies with motorists.
“We at Mariano Morales Law believe, as Chief Batiste says, that drivers’ choices are what cause car crashes,” said Morales, founder of the Mariano Morales Law Firm.
“Drivers who cause drunk driving wrecks chose to drive after drinking,” he continued. “Drivers who crash their cars because they were texting while driving chose to engage in this form of distracted driving. These are not accidents.”
In a joint State Patrol, Traffic Commission and state Department of Transportation news release about the crash statistics, Batiste said, “There are no accidents in traffic. Each of us has the power to reduce collisions simply by making better choices.”
Batiste added that the three most important choices are slowing down, paying attention to the road and driving sober.
Morales, whose law firm investigates car accidents in the preparation of personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits on behalf of accident victims, said any reduction in car accidents is progress for the state of Washington.
“We’d love to see Washington embrace this good news about fewer car accidents as a point of pride, and work toward further reductions in accident rates, particularly in drunk driving and distracted driving cases,” he said. “Unfortunately, we know that there will always be careless and reckless drivers among us.”
Morales said part of the fight against drivers who are negligent and reckless is the filing of civil actions by those they harm. Anyone who is injured or who has a family member die in a car accident that was not their fault should have an experienced Washington car accident attorney investigate the circumstances of the wreck, he said.
“Personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits can secure needed compensation for those who are hurt or who suffer other losses in accidents,” Morales said. “But they also send a message to those drivers who would shirk their duty to highway safety that they will be held accountable.”
