“Lasting Impressions” is set against the backdrop of 1960s Haiti. It is here that readers meet Fritz and Crystal. Fritz leaves the world he knows to study in Paris for four years. It is his intention to come back once he graduates and marry Crystal.
His mother has other plans for the two lovers. The mother’s hatred of Crystal comes out as she shows her son “evidence” of his love being unfaithful. Devastated, Fritz leaves Paris and ventures to America to forget the dark, twisted world around him. Here he regains his confidence and self-esteem, even investing in a business endeavor in Haiti.
Five years pass and readers see Fritz return to Haiti a different man – one with purpose and confidence. Once home, he must endure confrontations that will force him to accept several painful truths about his past.
Beliard-Michel hopes readers will begin to consider the effects of colorism and racism towards black women within their communities after reading this book, and that they will see Haiti in a different light from the popularly presented version in international media.
