New African American Board Leadership Institute Launches BoardExec Seminar to Help Diversify Governing Boards

The African American Board Leadership Institute launches new initiatives to help strength nonprofit, public and private organizations through recruiting, preparing and placing African Americans on governing boards.

The newly formed African American Board Leadership Institute (AABLI), a project of Community Partners, announced today that it will offer its BoardExec Seminar this fall. AABLI’s stated mission is to “strengthen nonprofit, public and private organizations through recruiting, preparing and placing African Americans on governing boards.”

According to Attorney Virgil Roberts, co-founder and board chair, “AABLI was formed to increase the representation of well-qualified African American individuals on boards and in critical board leadership positions, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of governing boards and better reflecting the diversity of the communities they serve.”

AABLI’s goals are to 1) prepare African American professionals to serve on a broad range of governing boards, 2) increase the number of African Americans serving on governing boards, and 3) increase active participation of African Americans on governing boards to ensure that these individuals contribute their unique perspectives, experience and insight to successful governance.

The African American Board Leadership Institute will help expand resources and broaden the pool of candidates through its three core programs: BoardExec Leadership Series, Board Fellows Program, and Board Alumni Program.

Established in 2011 to develop a pipeline of qualified African American candidates for membership on governing boards, AABLI is led by a distinguished group of experienced professionals from the public, private, for-profit and nonprofit sectors. All have served on numerous boards, commissions and committees, and have developed strong professional relationships.

They include Virgil Roberts (chair), managing partner of the law firm Bobbitt & Roberts; Carl Ballton, president and CEO of the Union Bank Foundation; Reveta Bowers, head of school for The Center for Early Education; Eugene Boykins, president of BBGC; Paul Hudson, chairman and CEO of Broadway Financial Corporation; Vincent Jones, senior program officer at the Liberty Hill Foundation; Beverly Ryder, president of Ryder Consulting; and Yvette Chappell-Ingram, co-founder and president of the African American Board Leadership Institute.
