Tinseltown is glowing yet again, and the demand for spray tanning technicians is in overdrive. From January’s Golden Globe Awards to the Grammys being held in a few short weeks, celebrities prepare for their red-carpet waltz with the perfect spray tan shimmer—a healthier, tanning alternative in the wintertime. But for those hoping to break into the spray tan industry, it’s not as simple as buying a spray gun and supplies. Recognized spray tanning industry expert Simone Emmons, owner of the Hollywood Airbrush Tanning Academy, released today a top 10 list for aspiring spray tanning technicians: What You Need to Know to Succeed in the Spray Tanning Industry.
According to Emmons, in order to be successful, spray tanning technicians require a wealth of knowledge that can only be acquired through expert training and experience. She outlines the most important things technicians need to know:
1. Chemical composition of spray tan solution(s)
2. Differences between the six skin types and how to prepare solution(s) for each
3. Differences between skin conditions such as Rosacea, Psoriasis, and Vitiligo
4. Pre-appointment skin preparation techniques and post-appointment tan maintenance
5. FDA recommendations regarding protective supplies
6. Proper ventilation techniques to protect themselves and clients
7. Solution measurements (in both ounces and milliliters)
8. Proper spraying techniques to achieve even coverage and which equipment to use
9. Solution storage methods
10. Proper equipment cleaning and maintenance
Apart from the abovementioned knowledgebase, technicians wanting to start their own spray tanning businesses must comply with any OSHA and insurance requirement.
Commenting on the need for quality training, recent Hollywood Airbrush Tanning Academy graduate Shelby Graham writes, “After making the decision to start a mobile airbrush tanning company, I bought my equipment and some solution. I thought I could teach myself and didn’t need training. After spraying my husband for the first time, I realized that I was wrong!”
Emmons offers a popular one-day, hands-on spray tanning course at the Hollywood Airbrush Tanning Academy in Los Angeles. But not all spray tanning training courses are the same, she says: “Many spray tanning training institutions only educate students on their own equipment and products they sell; however, Hollywood Airbrush Tanning Academy does not sell any of their own products! Our focus is to provide quality training and education, not to peddle the latest tanning solution. We really care about our students’ success.”
The Hollywood Airbrush Tanning Academy trains students from across the country on a range of spray tanning techniques, as well as how to match the right formulas to fit every skin tone, quickly and easily. Students can choose private training, a single day, 12-hour course, two, six-hour sessions taught over two days, or custom video conference training. In all cases, students receive one-on-one training in order to become a certified “Spray Tanning Professional.”
After course completion, students also receive ongoing support and a detailed set of sales and marketing tools, resources and strategies called the “Spray Tanning Blueprint for Success.”
Academy graduate Shelby continues, “There is so much more to this business than I expected and am extremely grateful to Simone for sharing her wealth of information with me.”
Hollywood Airbrush Tanning Academy is now accepting enrollment applications for new students.
