"Time for watching whales, savoring Gustavus Inn’s fresh cuisine and just to be surrounded by nature in Alaskan-style immensity –that is what makes Alaska one of my favorite tour destinations.” --Peg Abbott, owner
Anchorage, AK (PRWEB) February 14, 2013
Naturalist Journeys, a top nature and birding tour company, is proud to announce their upcoming July 28 to August 5, 2013, Southeast Alaska wildlife and birding tour. With five nights at the Gustavus Inn near Glacier Bay National Park, two nights in Haines/Skagway, and a final night in Juneau, participants will be able to delve deeper into Southeast Alaska’s essence as they explore, hike, kayak, or relax at their own pace, not on a cruise.
“We have struggled for years trying to find a way to allow our participants to experience the beauty of Southeast Alaska without having to share that experience with 1200 or more on a cruise,” explains Peg Abbott, owner of Naturalist Journeys, a nature tour company that offers specialty travel. “For our clientele, cruises seemed too large, too structured, or just too expensive,” she continues. “By hosting a lodge-based tour, participants can more fully immerse themselves in the quiet, serenity, and utter beauty of Southeast Alaska. With a lodge-based tour we can set the pace, enjoy full days on the water for whale-watching and glacier-gazing, and return to cozy, locally-owned accommodations and dining establishments at night. Abbott stresses that small-scale ecotourism is vital to retaining authentic tourist opportunities in Alaska. Birding and nature tour participants can hike coastal trails, peek into tide-pools, identify the myriad wildflowers, and search for wolves, bears, and seabirds like murrelets and puffins.” The nine-day guided Alaska tour is limited to 12 persons, and has options for fishing and flightseeing.

More about Ecotourism in Southeast Alaska:
Together with Admiralty Island, Glacier Bay is recognized by the United Nations as a Biosphere Reserve; in 1992 Glacier Bay was recognized as an International World Heritage Site. Glacier Bay is not accessible by car, only by air and boat, and the town of Gustavus is as authentic Alaska as they come, with just 500 year-round residents. Wildlife abounds, with Bald Eagles, puffins, and Orca, Minke, and Humpback whales. Wolves, Grizzly Bears, Moose, Steller’s Sea Lions, mink and porcupines are among the other species to be found. Wildflowers abound at a Nature Conservancy Preserve close to town.
More about the Alaska Birding and Nature Tour, July 28-August 5, 2013
On this week-long wildlife and birding tour, participants enjoy historic lodgings with local hosts amid spectacular settings. The tour begins in Gustavus and ends in Juneau. After time in Gustavus, on land at Glacier Bay, and at sea in the Icy Straits, the group travels by air, flight-seeing their way to Haines, to take in another spectacular and wildlife-rich area based from an historic inn, also prized for its cuisine. A day-long trip to Skagway, a ride on the spectacular White’s Pass train and return to Juneau by ferry, is also featured. The tour is limited to 12 participants.
Company owner Peg Abbott heads up this summer’s guided Alaska birding and wildlife tour. At the helm of a top birding and nature tour company, she guides less and less each year, but says she can’t stay away from Alaska. Asked why, she smiles and says, “It’s a tough assignment, being pulled from the office and transferred to Alaska’s long summer days replete with wildflowers. Time for watching whales, savoring Gustavus Inn’s fresh cuisine and just to be surrounded by nature in Alaskan-style immensity –that is what makes Alaska one of my favorite tour destinations.”
