New York / Berlin, February, 11, 2013—artnet Auctions is proud to feature à la mode: Fashion Photographs, an auction of works by iconic fashion photographers such as Irving Penn, Helmut Newton, Norman Parkinson, Horst P. Horst, Sante D'Orazio, and George Hoyningen-Huene.

The sale features an arresting photograph by Peter Beard, entitled Danielle Luna on the Diaries, Montauk Point, July 1977 (1977). Though Beard is well-known for his extensive travels in Africa, this photo, estimated at US$20,000 to 25,000, was taken much closer to home. Luna crouches protectively over a stack of Beard’s diaries, almost is as if she is one of the wild animals that Beard has photographed on safari, revealing the photographer’s interest in the interconnectedness of humans and animals.

Another highlight of the sale is Irving Penn’s Two Hairy Young Women, New York, May 1995, estimated at US$20,000 to 25,000. This playful image of two models with their wigs on backwards was part of a shoot for Vogue’s July 1995 issue, and exemplifies the streamlined, minimalist compositions and dramatic lighting for which Penn was known.

The sale also includes a 1951 photograph by Norman Parkinson, The Art of Travel, Wenda Waiting for the Hermes to be Repaired, Nairobi Airport. This work, estimated at US$10,000 to 15,000, is an iconic portrait of the artist’s wife, the chic and stylish Wenda Parkinson, beneath the propellers of the plane.

The à la mode: Fashion Photographs sale is live on artnet Auctions from February 11 through 19, 2013, and on view here.
