ASEOHosting, the popular provider of multiple IP hosting and EU and US dedicated SEO servers have issued a recommendation that clients disable their browser's Java capabilities because of persistent and recurring security risks.

Over the past few months there have been frequent announcements of zero day exploits in Java. These exploits often allow malicious websites and individuals to compromise computers on the net via the browser. Compromised machines can then be used by criminals for identity theft, infecting other machines, or as part of a botnet.

These Java exploits have been incorporated into several exploit kits, such as Cool and Blackhole, as well as penetration testing software like Metasploit. Because of this, the exploits are available to be used by even unskilled hackers, and it is estimated that many sites and machines have already been compromised in this way.

The Java runtime is no longer necessary for running the vast majority of consumer facing web applications. Because of the low level of deployment and the high risk of security compromise, ASEOHosting believes that allowing Java Internet access via the browser by default is unjustified risk.

"As a responsible member of the online community, ASEOHosting always recommends that its clients follow security best practices," commented ASEOHosting’s Vice President of Customer Relations, Daniel Page, "We can no longer recommend that our clients use Java applications online in an uncontrolled environment such as the Internet."

With this announcement, ASEOHosting joins the large number of industry and government bodies calling for Java to be disabled in browsers, including the [Department of Homeland Security.

It should be noted that Java is not the same as JavaScript. JavaScript is ubiquitous on the Web and is used by many sites. It does not require the Java Virtual Machine, and will not be affected by the removal of Java plugins from browsers.
ASEOHosting have made available further details on their blog, including [instructions on removing Java from the most popular browsers.
