On February 7th, Atlanta wine store Capital City Package held a sale for a Spanish red wine, Spada Tinta de Toro 2009, for only $8.99. In addition, customers had the opportunity to come to the store that Thursday and meet the famous winemaker of Willamette Valley Vineyards during the afternoon from 2-4 pm.
“Tinta de Toro is a local clone of the Tempranillo grape from the Toro region of Spain," says Certified Wine Specialist of Capital City Package Larry Kantrowitz. "Tempranillo is a derivative of the Spanish word temprano, meaning ‘early’, indicating a faster ripening than other Spanish varietals by several weeks. Tempranillo thrives off of the cool nights, producing elegance and acidity, and then thickens and ripens under the hot sun of Toro, gaining color and richness, a feat only the climate in Spain can truly achieve."
Tinta de Toro has bold, present tannins that hit the palate first, followed by waves of juicy ripe cherries, roses and blackberries. The fruit of this wine dominates the glass with an intensity and concentration of dark fruits. Ripe and flavorful, Tinta de Toro would be excellent with cheeses, a variety of meats and any type of grilled fish, like salmon or scallops, with a rich sauce.
"Tinta de Toro is considered the noble grape of Spain. You won’t find this wine valued at such a low price anywhere else!”
In addition to this sale, Capital City Package had founder and winemaker of Willamette Valley Vineyards make an appearance in the store from 2-4 pm to sign bottles and talk about his wines.
“I first met Jim while working at a wine bar in Florida and have kept a good relationship with him ever since,” says Kantrowitz. “A genuine Oregonian interested in fishing, hiking and Pinot Noir most of all, Jim is down to earth and a great person to chat up wine or the outdoors. Our customers had the chance to pop in our store and pick up some of his great wines at 15% off while talking to him about his experiences.”
