Chicago, Illinois (PRWEB) October 12, 2012
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the USDOT released an alert earlier today warning about the sale of counterfeit air bags used by independent body and repair shops in vehicles involved in crash. NHTSA stated that the faulty air bags have been used by repair shops for the past three years, but caused no known fatalities or injuries.
Vehicle owners who know that air bags in their vehicles have been replaced over the past three years by anyone other than new car dealerships (independent repair shop or online purchases), are all advised to have their air bags examined by professionals.
Consumers at risk include those who have had air bags changed in the previous 3 years at a repair shop that is not part of a new car dealership, owners of salvaged or rebuilt vehicles, those who changed their air bags from online and aftermarket sources such as Ebay or other non-certified sources, particularly if they were bought at unrealistic low prices (for example less than $400).
Fadi Snenneh of Insurance Navy urged all of Insurance Navy's clients who have had their air bags replaced in a covered auto insurance loss to call the Agency at (708) 237-0404. "Less than 1 per thousand vehicles are affected by this problem, and we have no proof of any fatalities or bodily injuries so far, but it is worth it for people to take precautions," Fadi said.
