Backyard Travel, Asia’s most innovative tour company, has today released news of a new tailor-made tour taking travelers to Myanmar’s Inle Lake and Nyaung Shwe to experience a behind-the-scenes insight into the magical nation’s delicious cuisine. The tour includes a taste-testing at Red Mountain Estate, Myanmar’s finest wine producer, and a cooking experience in the home of a local Intha hill tribe family.

This tailored tour allows travelers the opportunity to discover the key elements of Myanmar cuisine, tracing the steps from production and harvesting through to transportation, cooking preparation and, of course, eating.

The two-day, one-night culinary tour takes place in the region around the majestic Inle Lake which sustains the area. Travelers will be taken to experience the buzz of a local marketplace where local hill tribes such as the Intha, Pa-Oh and Shan hill tribes convene to sell and trade their handmade wares. They are then treated to a private boat trip around the lake, giving them the chance to observe the stilted houses and leg-rowing fishermen the lake is famous for.

The Inle Lake tour then takes travelers to the lake’s western shoreline to the lesser-seen Khaung Daing Village, famous for their Shan tofu specialties including fried tofu crackers, and observe the well-guarded tricks and methods used to produce them. Travelers are then guided to the house of a local family who will share their cooking techniques, passed down through generations before they are served up a feast of traditional cuisine.

Day two of the Myanmar tour will be spent in Nyaung Shwe, a town just a few km’s north of the lake, commonly known as the gateway to Inle Lake. Whilst in Nyaung Shwe, travelers will have the chance to take a guided tour of the town, including seeing local markets and the ‘Tomato House’, used as a depot for storing goods from the lake before they move around the country.

The culinary investigation climaxes at Red Mountain Estate, one of Myanmar’s top vineyards. The winery produces several varietals from French grapes that are harvested by the Pa-Oh hill tribe people. Travelers will enjoy not only a taste testing experience but also a fabulous lunch designed to pair perfectly with the wine.
