Cap-Op Energy, the premier aggregator of Oil and Gas energy efficiency carbon offset, validated a new project module for their Distributed Energy Efficiency Project Platform (DEEPP) that will enable Oil and Gas producers with operations in British Columbia, Canada, to cost effectively upgrade their distributed facilities to emit fewer greenhouse gases (GHGs).
This carbon offset aggregation program will reduce GHG emissions through the conservation of natural gas in the oil and gas industry by converting high-bleed pneumatic controllers to low-bleed (or self- contained) controllers, while providing functionally equivalent results.

Cap-Op Energy’s clients use the DEEPP to overcome the challenges associated with the development, aggregation, tracking and finance of carbon reduction and fuel gas saving projects by easily quantifying the amount of GHGs that were not emitted as a result of their facility upgrades so they can receive verified carbon offsets for their effort.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has shown that pneumatic controllers are one of the largest sources of methane emissions in the oil and gas industry, representing approximately 28.5 percent of all methane emitted from petroleum systems. The Canadian situation is similar and the several hundred thousand pneumatic controllers in operation today present a significant opportunity to reduce emissions and wasted natural gas.
Pneumatic controllers used in the natural gas industry are typically powered by natural gas to regulate process variables such as pressure, flow rate and liquid level. As part of normal operating procedures, pneumatic devices release or bleed natural gas to the atmosphere and, consequentially, are a major source of methane emissions. To reduce the emissions associated with these devices, proponents can choose to retrofit or replace the high-bleed pneumatics with newer technologies that are considered low-bleed devices that provide the same function.
Project validation is an independent audit process performed by a certified validation body and a required step in achieving real GHG offsets under the BC Emission Offset Regulation. It serves to provide qualified third- party assurance that the project plan GHGs assertion is complete, accurate and transparent in all material respects.
