Kremer Eye Center announced today its commitment to continued excellence in the field of LASIK vision correction with the upgrade to the advanced iFS (femtosecond) laser in all of its surgical eye centers in PA, DE, and NJ. The iFS laser is the only FDA-cleared femtosecond laser proven with more than 10 years of clinical research improving both the safety and precision of LASIK.

The iFS laser offers a highly sophisticated way to prepare the eye for LASIK without a blade ever touching it. It is the most advanced form of the bladeless IntraLase Method, available in the region only at Kremer Eye Center. LASIK using the iFS laser is proven to provide faster visual recovery, fewer dry eye symptoms, and maximum flap stability. And the iFS laser is 2.5 times faster than previous generation femtosecond lasers (including previous IntraLase models), creating precise, predictable flaps in only about 13 seconds per eye.

Historically, the use of an oscillating metal blade, called a microkeratome, in the first step of LASIK caused the majority of LASIK complications. The iFS laser, however, now has the new ability to create a distinctive beveled-edge that allows for precise repositioning, alignment and seating of the LASIK flap for maximum stability – three times that of a blade-created flap.

The iFS also makes it possible for the corneal flap to be 100 percent laser-created, allowing for flap customization and an individualized treatment. The Kremer surgeons specify flap diameter, depth, hinge location and width, and side-cut architecture to meet the patient’s individual needs.

Clinical studies show excellent visual outcomes and high patient satisfaction when the blade-free IntraLase Method is used. Over four million LASIK procedures have been performed worldwide employing the IntraLase Method, which is now used in an estimated 61.1 percent of all U.S. LASIK procedures. The IntraLase Method has been among the fastest growing refractive surgical techniques worldwide, as traditional microkeratome (metal blade) LASIK procedures continue to decline.

How LASIK with the IntraLase Method Works

The iFS laser is used in the important first step of the LASIK procedure – the creation of a LASIK flap. The second step involves reshaping the cornea using an excimer laser. Historically, the first step of LASIK was performed using a hand-held microkeratome. While LASIK has proven to be a successful and relatively safe procedure, most complications and patient concerns have been associated with the use of the microkeratome

Kremer Eye Center Upgrades to iFS Laser

The blade-free IntraLase Method eliminates the microkeratome and its blade. With the iFS laser, the Kremer surgeons precisely control the first step of LASIK delivering rapid pulses of light, a quadrillionth of a second each, to a pre-programmed depth and position within the cornea. Each pulse forms a microscopic bubble, and as the iFS laser moves back and forth across the eye, the bubbles are connected to form a LASIK flap. Just prior to vision correction, the flap is gently lifted to reveal a smooth corneal bed, optimized for reshaping to achieve vision correction.

In clinical studies the blade-free IntraLase Method resulted in better outcomes with fewer LASIK flap-related complications. More than 95 percent of patients treated in the IntraLase group achieved faster visual recovery at one month and three months post-op.

Most patients who choose the blade-free IntraLase Method see better immediately, with recovery typically lasting a few hours, followed by a few days of mild eye irritation.
