There’s more to having a successful online e-commerce presence than simply having a web site. Small- and medium-sized businesses that want to compete on a local and international scale need fully optimized sites that consumers can find and interact with.

Numero Uno Web Solutions (NumeroUnoWeb.com), a fast-growing global Internet marketing firm that caters to small- and mid-sized business-to-consumer companies, is releasing a statement on a recent study noting how Canadian retailers that fail to embrace e-commerce web sites are trailing behind their online cross-border counterparts—and running out of time.
The report by U.S.-based Forrester Research observes that U.S. companies with an online presence are better positioned to provide online retail services to Canadian shoppers than homegrown companies are. According to the Forrester report, about 68% of online Canadian shoppers said they have purchased items through international web sites. From that group, 72% said it was because they couldn’t find what they were looking for from a Canadian online retailer. According to the report, the biggest problem online shoppers had with Canadian web sites was the price for shipping. Almost 68% of those polled found them too high.
“There’s more to having a successful online e-commerce presence than simply having a web site. Small- and medium-sized businesses that want to compete on a local and international scale need fully optimized sites that consumers can find and interact with. They also need to provide the kind of services that connect with the users’ needs,” says Andy Wu, Business Development Manager at Numero Uno Web Solutions. “That includes sites that are easy to find and navigate. They also need to be competitive when it comes to shipping, customer service, delivery policies, and return policies.”
Wu adds: “Regardless of budget, small- and medium-sized businesses can, with the right SEO [search engine optimization] strategies, optimize their e-commerce web sites, making them more discoverable to search engines and shareable by users. This can increase web traffic and search engine page results, and lead to sales.”
Further commenting on the report’s findings, Wu observes: “Failing to design a web site that is search engine-friendly and easy to navigate means brands are losing out on traffic and sales. At the same time, an easy customer service experience can leave a positive impression and lead to repeat customers. If businesses want to increase sales, they need to foster strategic SEO and SEM [search engine marketing] strategies; whether they rely on foot traffic, Internet sales, or both.”
