My husband has been dealing with Alzheimer's for several years now. I can't remember the last time he had a smile on his face as big as he did during your class. When is the next one?

Tracey Eccleston, co-director of Lakshmi Voelker Chair Yoga (LVCY) Teacher Training and LVCY Teacher, is working with the Canadian Alzheimer's Society of Kitchener-Waterloo and Cambridge. Ms. Eccleston had explained the successes around the world with chair yoga in with Alzheimer’s patients.
This led to the Canadian society inviting her to educate their clientele about the benefits of yoga to be gained through LVCY. Each of the two groups in the Kitchener-Waterloo and Cambridge area of Ontario had the opportunity to experience a full chair yoga class.
Ms. Eccleston polled each class before beginning. Over 80% said they "would not be able to do yoga especially given their Alzheimer’s.”
Ms. Eccleston assured everyone that they would be able to gain all the benefits of yoga poses and breathing techniques. She got everyone seated and started with started with basic yogic breaths. She took the groups through the Joint Opening Series, flowed into the Eight Spinal Movements, and within twenty minutes everyone in the room was working to their level of flexibility and enjoying the Warrior Series.
As they were breathing into Warrior II, Ms. Eccleston again polled the classes asking how many people were enjoying Lakshmi Voelker Chair Yoga. There were smiles on everyone's faces and plenty of happy comments.
"I had no idea that just doing a few deep breaths could make me feel so much better."
"This is fabulous, everyone needs to know about this kind of yoga. My body feels awake and energized."
"My husband has been dealing with Alzheimer's for several years now. I can't remember the last time he had a smile on his face as big as he did during your class. When is the next one?"
Ms. Eccleston is working with the Alzheimer Society and Memory Fit (sponsored by Kitchener-Waterloo Counselling Services) to implement two regular LVCY Classes.
Ms. Eccleston is in discussions with Memory Fit about making Lakshmi Voelker Chair Yoga Certification a part of every Memory Fit Certification.
Much of the Lakshmi Voelker Chair Yoga work with Alzheimer’s has been inspired by the ground-breaking work of Dr. Lyn Litchke of Texas State University. She brought an LVCY teacher training to the Recreational Therapy department of Texas State several years ago. She has done some outstanding research on Lakshmi Voelker Chair Yoga’s effects on Alzheimer’s patients.
“As for LVCY and my work with persons who have Alzheimer's.... what is so incredible to me is the sharing of the experience and the spiritual nature of the yoga. I also see such a strong connection between Naomi Feil's concept of Validation Therapy and LVCY yoga that I am inspired to continue using the power of touch in all my classes (LVCY Pair Chair Yoga) that I teach.”
