Online travel insurance comparison site Cheap.co.uk has provided a snapshot of travel claims data from one of the underwriters on the site for the month of December 2012.
It’s often considered that cancellation cover and medical insurance are two of the most important aspects of a travel insurance policy and claims data released by Cheap agrees with this. Medical claims accounted for around thirty three percent over the month with a reasonably even split between illness and accident and injury.
Cancellations accounted for almost twenty eight percent of claims although the December wintery weather may have potentially skewed results slightly.
Another area which appeared of importance but often over looked by travellers was the personal items cover. This cover is often excluded off the cheaper travel insurance policies on the market but according to results the number of claims in this area appeared at sixteen percent and as the third highest area of claims in terms of numbers.
A spokesmen for the site commented: “it’s estimated that around thirty percent of travellers travel without insurance but many consider it a very important travel extra and some won’t travel without it. With some of this claims data you can see medical costs are sometimes passing into thousands of pounds, especially with the winter sports insurance where for injuries the total paid out for a medical claims has risen considerably for the past few seasons.”
