Continuing Education Company, a non-profit medical education organization, was invited to the 2nd Annual Immersive Learning Conference and Symposium which was held on January 15-17, 2013 in San Antonio, to demonstrate a new simulation technology which brings highly immersive medical simulations into a live continuing medical education (CME) setting

Developed jointly by NexLearn LLC of Wichita, KS and EduMotion SA of Modena, Italy, this new method of CME delivery creates a simulated learning environment that places physician learners in risk-free, real-world scenarios. “Use of simulation in continuing medical education can be used to create real-world physician/patient situations. Delivering these immersive simulations to an audience of physicians in a live classroom setting can have a profound impact on physician behavior as a result of increased engagement and enhanced acquisition and retention”, stated Walter Ejnes, President of Continuing Education Company.

The technology was recently used for a medical simulation project on Atrial Fibrillation and Stroke Prevention which has been accredited as a Performance Improvement CME (PI-CME) activity by the American Academy of Family Practice (AAFP). The CME activity simulates real-life situations and creates a learn-by-doing approach that allows learners to experience myriad plans of action—from successful to unsuccessful, depending on the user’s knowledge level and performance. Every action path, whether right or wrong, is aligned closely to specific learning objectives to keep users on track to learn the essential information. The technology can be used as an alternative to chart audits traditionally used in PI-CME activities. Throughout 2012, over 1000 primary care physicians participated in the PI-CME activity during live CME conferences organized by Continuing Education Company.

The annual Immersive Learning Conference and Symposium, organized by the Immersive Learning University, explores new and innovative applications for Immersive Learning and Simulations from some of the most experienced practitioners in the field. The conference also features case studies, best practices, peer discussions, technology Q & A sessions, and future solutions discussions.
