Tulsa, OK (PRWEB) May 06, 2013

People who take Zithromax, a popular antibiotic used to treat infections, should take the recent warning about the drug by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration seriously, dangerous drug attorney Hansen Dirani said today.

“The FDA does not issue warnings if they do not believe there are serious health concerns,” said Dirani, whose law firm Hansen Dirani & Associates handles cases involving people injured by dangerous drug side effects. “That’s why we strongly urge anyone taking the drug manufactured by Pfizer to consult with a doctor as soon as possible. You could be at risk of a serious health problem. If you or a loved one is experiencing side effects of this or any drug, you also should discuss your legal options with a drug side effects lawyer.”

Dirani said his firm is prepared to review potential Zithromax lawsuits on behalf of individuals who have suffered possibly life-threatening abnormal heart rhythms. Dirani said his firm also can help families who have lost loved ones who used Zithromax, also known as Z-Pak.

The FDA issued the warning because the drug, also known as Z-Pak, can cause “abnormal - and possibly fatal - heart rhythms in some patients,” according to a March 13 report in CNN. Specifically, CNN reported that researchers at Vanderbilt University examined the records of Medicaid patients in Tennessee over a 14 year period. Researchers “found a 2.5 times higher risk of death from heart disease in the first five days of using a Z-Pak when compared to another common antibiotic or no antibiotics at all.”

In particular, people with existing heart problems seemed to be especially vulnerable to experiencing changes in electrical activity in the heart, which could lead to a potentially fatal heart rhythm, according to a March 13 Fox News report.

As a result, the FDA is updating the label on Zithromax to warn people about such potential side effects, Fox News reported.

Talking to a doctor about any serious side effects as soon as possible is critical, Dirani said. “A drug that can potentially cause a so-called ‘fatal heart rhythm’ is not something to be taken lightly,” Dirani said. “We regularly handle cases involving people who sustain serious injuries from drugs that were supposedly safe. That’s why we fight so hard for the rights of people injured by dangerous drugs. It’s not just them we’re fighting for. It’s everyone else taking that same drug and other people that could do so in the future.”
