The American Public Works Association (APWA) announced that Dondlinger & Sons Construction Co. has won awards for two of its river improvement projects:
- Lincoln Street Bridge — Project of the Year Award, Transportation, $5 Million, But Less Than $25 Million
- River Corridor Improvement Project — Project of the Year Award, Structures, Less Than $5 Million
The River Corridor Improvement project architect was LawKingdon Architecture. The primary consultant for the Lincon Street Bridge project was MKEC Engineering Consultants. The managing agency for both projects was the City of Wichita.
The APWA Awards Program is the most prestigious in the public works world today, annually recognizing outstanding individuals, groups and chapters who represent excellence in the public works profession. The Kansas Chapter of the APWA will present the awards in a ceremony May 2 in Lawrence, Kan.
“We are honored to be recognized by the APWA with these awards,” said Tom Dondlinger, president. “Both projects had their own set of challenges. Our team worked with architects, consultants and engineers to succeed in fulfilling a host of requirements while completing structures that beautify our city.”
The River Corridor Improvement project focused on renewing the area west of the historic Broadview Hotel and north of Douglas Ave. , which had fallen into disrepair. Challenges included tight logistics, simultaneous construction schedules shared with the hotel and the hottest summer on record. Dondlinger & Sons Construction completed the project within the specified timeline, as well as in time for the popular Riverfest events.
The Lincoln Street Bridge project included reconstruction of both the bridge and the low dam that ran underneath the bridge. Wildlife agencies required the new design to allow migrating fish to be able to navigate the structure. The project has been forwarded on to the National APWA.
