The success of weight loss surgery is highly dependant on what we teach the patients and the patients’ long-term follow up

Gulfport, MS (PRWEB) November 30, 2012

Gastric Bypass, or you may know it as the Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y procedure, is one of the most common surgical weight loss options available today. The procedure performed for over 30 years now, has become safer and more effective with the evolution of technology itself, especially with regard to the laparoscopic approach and the Center of Excellence's care pathways for patient care.

In a recent interview, Dr. Donald Balder, bariatric surgeon in Gulfport, MS in a recent interview talks about gastric bypass surgery as a highly effective option to treat morbid obesity, condition which became the largest epidemic in the state of Mississippi.

The television interview features a new bariatric patient of Dr. Balder’s who decided to undergo laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery after years of struggling with obesity related health conditions, and the cycle of dieting, losing weight and quickly re-gaining weight. The patient weighed more then 300 pounds and had high blood pressure and constant joint pain.

Even though all minimally invasive weight loss surgeries have well known potential associated risks, often it is a greater risk not to have surgery. “Living with co-morbid, weight-related illnesses such as diabetes, heart problems, sleep apnea and hypertension oftentimes pose a greater risk than surgery,” Dr. Balder said.

Gastric Bypass is not a “quick fix” per se; it’s a surgery tool” designed to improve overall health. Prior to surgery, Dr. Balder personally teaches his patients proper lifestyle modification with necessary diet and exercise plans. Patients are strongly encouraged to adhere to these methods, often for several months to help prepare them for the changes to come. After the surgery, patients then adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle that results in weight loss, as well as emotional changes such as improved confidence.
