So much of addiction revolves around shame. Shame can cause an individual to turn to drugs, abusing substances to numb the pain of past trauma and feelings of worthlessness. It can also keep addicts out there using as their actions while under the influence perpetuate the shame cycle. As the saying goes, “Secrets keeps you sick.”
But in a cozy, dimly lit coffee house filled with overstuffed couches and art decorating the walls, clients at Recovery Associates gather to read their personal writing. With a wry sense of self-awareness and no shortage of humor, clients share their anger, pain and grief as they struggle to come to terms with an often traumatic past and build a new life for themselves.
“It’s really freeing,” shares one attendee at Recovery Associates’ Open Mic Night. “I don’t know why, but for some reason it’s easier for me to get up there and let it all out in a poem then try to explain how I feel by just talking to someone.”
For many, simply the act of creating is healing. They are able to take something shameful or heartbreaking, and recreate it as something inspiring.
