Oak Park, IL (PRWEB) May 19, 2013
A two-car accident that according to the Chicago Tribune was caused by a drunk driver who crashed into a police cruiser in the Chicago neighborhood of Austin is one of the latest illustrations of the dangers of drinking and driving, said Oak Park car accident lawyer Gregory F. Coplan, of Coplan & Crane law firm.
Coplan today said more work needs be done to reduce the number of impaired drivers on Illinois roads.
“There’s no excuse for drinking and driving,” said Coplan, whose firm represents people seriously injured in accidents. “Despite decades of anti-drunk driving campaigns, people still make the reckless decision to drive a car after having too much to drink. As personal injury attorneys, we urge parents and teachers to discuss the dangers of drunk driving with young people, and we support increased law enforcement efforts to keep impaired drivers off the road.”
According to the April 15 Chicago Tribune article titled “Charges Filed in Fatal Collision with Police SUV,” an 18-year-old Cicero man was killed in the two-vehicle accident that occurred on April 12, 2013, at around 11:20 p.m. near the intersection of Laramie Avenue and Congress Parkway in the Austin neighborhood in Chicago’s West Side. The victim was a passenger in a vehicle driven by a Joliet man who police said was speeding on Laramie Avenue when he crossed the center line of the road and crashed head on into a Chicago police department SUV, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Police charged the driver with reckless homicide, aggravated DUI involving death and aggravated DUI involving bodily harm, the Chicago Tribune reported. The driver was also cited by police for driving with a suspended license and not having insurance, according to the Tribune.
Coplan said people who are drinking alcohol should be responsible and choose a designated driver or call a taxi. He said people who are hosting a party should always offer non-alcoholic beverages and serve plenty of food, which can slow the rate of alcohol absorption. He said parents should tell their teenagers to always feel free to call them for a ride home if they are at a party and had too much to drink, and their teenagers should never accept a ride with someone who has been drinking.
Each day, nearly 30 people nationwide die in motor vehicle accidents involving a drunk driver, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Coplan said his law firm has helped individuals and families who have been affected by drunk driving accidents pursue compensation for their losses. “We have seen the devastating impact of DUI first hand. Drunk driving accidents can lead to physical, emotional and financial losses. We work aggressively to help victims obtain compensation and closure. We also believe an important part of our job is to send a message that drunk driving will not be tolerated in our society and negligent drivers will be held accountable.”
