A study recently released by Rice University in Houston, Texas, showed a correlation between pollution resulting in high ozone levels, to the amount of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests. The study was held over eight years and researchers took samples from air quality monitors and compared it to more than 11,000 coinciding cardiac arrests. The researchers found that increases in fine particular matter in the environment of six micrograms per day over two days raised the risk of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest by 4.6 percent.(Source)
DXE Medical Inc. has been environmentally aware since its start in 1999 and in accordance with this latest study, will strive to find more ways to do so. For example, DXE has paid close attention to its shipping department and reuses packing material, avoids Styrofoam peanuts, and recycles all discarded material. DXE also designed its building to use many sustainable options such as, interior low-energy T5 light fixtures, exterior solar light fixtures, programmable thermostats, and programmable sprinklers with rain sensors. In addition, DXE uses a Toyota Prius as its company car, to represent its support for vehicular alternatives for cleaner air.
DXE began as a distributor focused primarily on selling refurbished defibrillators. Although it now sells new equipment, it also has an in-house biomedical department that takes used equipment and restores it to like-new condition. “There are many pieces of medical equipment that are discarded for various reasons. Our biomedical technicians are able to take that equipment and give it a second life,” commented Justin Darby, Director of Marketing. “I believe our greatest contribution in being a sustainable company is when we take used or discarded equipment, recertify it, and put it back out there ready to save lives.”
In addition to offering refurbished equipment, DXE Medical offers defibrillator repair, preventive maintenance, and service contracts through their in-house biomedical company,2nd Life Biomedical. DXE Medical's goal is making sure medical equipment reaches its full-life potential. “Medical devices produced from established manufacturers were made to last, so in an effort to save owners money and sustain the equipment for as long as possible, our technicians make sure every piece is up to or exceeds the manufacturer's guidelines before shipping it to the customer.”
DXE Medical Inc., a Sarnova company, was founded in 1999. It provides new and refurbished defibrillators, AEDs, EKGs, as well as other medical equipment and has grown to serve customers in all 50 states and 40 countries worldwide. For more information, please visit: http://www.dxemed.com/.
