Sophie Bennet is an ordinary 8-year-old girl who lives a simple life with her family. That unembellished life, however, will dramatically change forever when one day, while eagerly watching at a charming porcelain-faced doll in a toy store, Layla, a beautiful, hooded woman comes to her, hands her a book with empty pages and a magical pen, and asks her to write a story for a whole world that needs her help. Will Sophie be willing to write the perfect tale? Readers can find out as they unfold the whole story in The Written World by up-and-coming author Fatimah Jan.

The Written World follows Sophie three years after that incident in the toy store. She and four of her siblings are moving after their parents’ passing. On her journey, she brings with her the story book where she is writing the story of Kingdom Calista, which soon to be ruled by its new, kindhearted queen. Evangeline will stand as the most powerful in the few hours. Her kindhearted soul is to take the lead of her people for the rest of their lives and hers. She is to be the queen of Calista, the mainland of all creatures. Without the sun and the moon, Calista itself will grow weaker and will soon one day vanish from the dimension, leaving all the other lands deserted. While she hardly sleeps thinking about the colossal responsibilities she is about to shoulder, her cruel younger twin sister Veronica is plotting against her and orders her huntsman to kill Evangeline, by way of a magical blade, to make herself the queen. Will Veronica’s evil plan succeed, and what can Sophie do?

Excerpt from The Written World:

“You,” she said, whipping her dress aside as she turned around, “will bring the heart of our precious Princess Evangeline.” Her huntsman stood, stunned. “And with what? Tomorrow being the New Sun, she is practically an immortal by now,” he reasoned. She smiled with the wicked glimmer shining in her eyes. Veronica lifted her sleeve as she stuck out her hand. As she pulled an object out to view, Sir Henry stepped backward. “With this,” she said as she touched the object’s sharp blades. Its handle was pure glass and inside held swirling pools of magic, but not any magic. It was the only magic that kept Calista and every single creature living among the lands alive till this very day, the sun’s and moon’s rays.

In this book, Jan has written an engrossing, fantastic tale where readers can follow a young girl as she weaves the gripping saga of the Kingdom Calista where greed, treachery and fatal conspiracy intensify. Now, Sophie is not only fated to write the story, but she is also destined to save and protect The Written World.
