David Crary has been working in the field service industry for over 30 years now. Early on in his career, Crary realized that paperwork was a serious detriment to his productivity and efficiency. His irrigation business was struggling to handle the amount of paperwork that piled up and invoicing wasn't happening in a timely manner. Crary needed to find a solution to manage his work orders, make his techs more efficient, and cut the time spent on invoicing and billing.
In 1998, Crary decided that other solutions were not going to cut it when it came to fixing the issues in his field service management business. He got the idea to make his own program and thus HindSite Software was born. The software made it easier to manage customer data, schedule and route crews, collect data in the field and bill in minutes, not hours. Since that time, HindSite has grown to deliver software for the Green Industry (lawn care software, landscaping business software, etc.), as well as plumbers, electricians, security installation companies, fence installers, computer repair businesses and many other field service businesses.
On January 9th, Crary will be passing along his words of wisdom when it comes to improving field service management businesses with the help of technology. His presentation to the Great Lakes Trade Exposition (GLTE), titled Incorporating Today's Digital Technology and Mobile Apps for the Irrigation Professional, will show green industry contractors how to use software and other technology to eliminate the redundant steps in a typical contractor's process. He'll show them how they'll save time, money and stress by introducing irrigation business software into their businesses.
“Your typical contractor doesn’t care about how data flows through their business,” explains David Crary. “But understanding how your data flows within your business is the key to using technology effectively and empowering your business. In these presentations, I’ll show irrigation contractors how to analyze their data flow and leverage to manage their business.”
For example, many irrigation businesses use GPS devices. However, they don’t have a fully integrated dispatch software system, and service technicians or crew leaders must type addresses on their GPS device. Typing in each address can waste 45 seconds to a minute every time they need to go to a new location, which can be as many as 5 to 10 times per day. Add it all up, and over the course of a typical year, irrigation businesses may waste days typing in addresses on their GPS device.
“I ran an irrigation business for 22 years,” says Crary. “I was losing money – and wasting time – at every turn, until I began to use technology, specifically irrigation software, to streamline processes. Then, I was able to do more with a lot less. I saved time. I saved money. And I grew my business. Technology empowered me to work on my business, not in it.”
The Great Lakes Trade Exposition (GLTE) is Michigan’s oldest and largest green industry trade show. Proudly claiming to be a regional show with a hometown feel, the GLTE hosts a community of over 300 firms in 400 booths exhibiting products and services designed to help businesses save money, increase their sales, and be more profitable. The trade show is being held from January 7-9 at the DeVos Place in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
