Griswold Home Care Builds Wheelchairs for Veterans at Spring Expo

I was honored to be included in the 2013 Griswold Spring Expo. It was great to have an opportunity to share some facts and figures about Alzheimer's Disease and to engage Griswold partners from around the country.

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) May 01, 2013

Griswold Home Care, a nationwide home care company, hosted its annual Spring Expo at the Sofitel Hotel in Center City Philadelphia, PA April 18th – 20th. The ‘Come Together’ themed event was planned to unite all Griswold Home Care owners, partners, and home office team members.

The 3-day conference included keynote presentations and workshops by Aaron Marcum of Home Care Pulse, Claire Day of the Delaware Valley Chapter of the National Alzheimer’s Association, Debbie Burak of VeteranAid.org, and Patty Servaes of Elder Resource Benefits Consulting.

The event concluded with a day filled of giving back. Griswold team members held their own Alzheimer’s Walk around Center City, Philadelphia and then built 8 wheelchairs for veterans cared for in a local rehabilitation and nursing center.

Griswold’s Conference had several major announcements:

  • Partnership with VeteranAid.org as the organization's exclusive home care advertiser and a forum sponsor. Griswold is also supporting VeteranAid.org founder, Debbie Burak, in raising awareness to improve the administration of the VA Aid and Attendance Pension Benefit.
  • National Griswold Home Care team support for the Alzheimer’s Association Walk.
  • Griswold Cares Foundation board announces administrator hire and non-profit will focus on respite care for family members. The foundation will begin application and grants soon.
  • Partnership with Elder Resource Benefits Consulting, a consulting firm that helps families understand the VA Aid and Attendance Pension benefit. ERBC also assists families when filing for the benefit, which can help them apply and receive the benefit in 4 months (versus an average of 9-months via the VA).

Debbie Burak, Founder of VeteranAid.org, a resource aimed toward increasing veterans' awareness of financial assistance available to them, shared about Griswold's partnership with VeteranAid.org:

“I am delighted to have created a partnership between VeteranAid.org and Griswold Home Care. Griswold Home Care is a top-notch organization who has set a very high standard of how things should be done.  The professionalism, support, and genuine concern found in every department is a testament to their universal commitment. By combining our efforts, we will truly make a difference!”

Griswold Home Care is also making strides toward becoming a National Team in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s Disease. Claire Day, Vice President Constituent Services of the Delaware Valley Chapter of the National Alzheimer’s Association, concluded her presentation at the 2013 Spring Expo by inviting attendees to take part in a seemingly spontaneous Alzheimer’s walk through Philadelphia. Claire’s team had discreetly prepared the walk, providing check-points throughout the walk and purple ‘Team Griswold’ t-shirts to raise Alzheimer's disease awareness during the walk. Claire shared her enthusiasm following the walk:

"I was honored to be included in the 2013 Griswold Spring Expo. It was great to have an opportunity to share some facts and figures about Alzheimer's Disease and to engage Griswold partners from around the country. Alzheimer's is the 6th leading cause of death and every 68 seconds someone in America develops it. We can't do this alone. We need our strong partners in caring to share our vision of a world without Alzheimer's disease."

Amanda Sites Hope, Administrator of the Griswold Cares Foundation, joined the Foundation team in March. Amanda has over 15 years experience in the nonprofit sector. She's served as Executive Director of a Pittsburgh-area nonprofit and Director of Volunteer Services at Hospice of the Bluegrass. Amanda was also appointed to the PA Community Service Advisory Council. Following the 2013 Spring Expo, Amanda remarked:

“I am amazed with all of the excitement that the foundation has created. The foundation received generous donations today, and we were able to recruit dozens of volunteers who want to further the foundation’s work in their areas. The interest and desire to get involved is truly overwhelming. The event has been a fantastic experience for me and truly beneficial for the Griswold Cares Foundation.”

The Griswold Cares Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that has narrowed its focus to concentrate on areas where it can have the most impact. A team of 10 dedicated board members have been appointed and grants will begin in the near future.

Team unity was the theme in Saturday afternoon’s ‘Build a Wheelchair’ event. Partnering with a team building company, Griswold Home Care built and donated 8 wheelchairs to the Caring Heart Manor and specifically to the American veterans they care for.
