The Pet and Bird Clinics, both South Branch and Wells Branch in Austin, are now offering a limited-time free heartworm test with the purchase of six months of heartworm protection.
Heartworm is a serious disease that afflicts dogs although it can affect cats too. It is caused by a parasitic worm that is carried by mosquitoes and enters the bloodstream of a pet from their bite. The parasite then takes up residence in the heart and multiplies causing a number of serious health problems, particularly to dogs, that include death. Symptoms are difficult to see until advanced stages and treatment can be difficult. Prevention is the best medicine.
In a few weeks mosquito season will begin and put dogs at risk which are not taking a heartworm prevention treatment.
"Heartworm is a terrible condition and a difficult one to treat. And it has become, sadly, very prevalent," counsels Dr. Savita Wadhwani, head veterinarian at the Wells Branch Pet and Bird Clinic. “It is vital that dog owners have their pets on a regular heartworm prevention treatment as the summer approaches, if they are not already. I have seen too many dogs needlessly suffer from not having such protection.”
In order to facilitate dog owners to get their pets on a prevention treatment, the clinics are offering a free heartworm test when the owner purchases six months of heartworm treatment. The test is given as part of an overall pet examination which costs only $15 for current clients and $20 for new clients. The offer will expire on April 30th.
“A pet brings so much joy to its owner and their family. We are trying to make it as cost effective as possible for owners to get this prevention as its lack can cause a lot of unnecessary pain and anguish for all involved. It breaks my heart when I see a dog come in with this disease,” concludes Dr. Wadhwani.
Both clinics are open seven days a week -weekdays 7am - 9pm, Saturday 8am - 3pm, Sunday 12pm - 5pm.
Appointments can be made by calling either clinic.
