Chicago, IL (PRWEB) March 27, 2013
A 31-year-old Chicago man was killed early on March 9 when his vehicle was rammed off the road by a driver who left the scene of the car accident on Interstate 57, according to CBS Chicago.
Chicago car accident lawyer Mike Slocumb of the Mike Slocumb Law Firm said fatal hit and run accidents are some of the most difficult types of accidents for families of victims.
“We deal with frustrated people all the time coping with the consequences of these serious accidents,” said Slocumb, a personal injury attorney serving Chicago. “People flee the scene for any number of reasons. Sometimes, the driver doesn’t have a license. In some cases, the driver may be operating under the influence of alcohol or in the process of committing another crime. Whatever the reason, it’s illegal to fail to stop and render aid in an accident. A hit and run also is a cowardly act. That’s why as a personal injury lawyer, I am committed to getting victims and their families the compensation and closure they need and deserve.”
Witnesses who saw the fatal accident on I-57 told Chicago police that an SUV pulled up alongside the car and rammed it, sending the vehicle off the road, down an embankment and onto the other side of the highway in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Chicago, according to the Chicago Tribune on March 9.
The accident claimed the life of Corey Owens, who was reportedly ejected from the vehicle during the highway auto accident near the intersection of Racine and 100th Street, CBS Chicago reported. Police believe a Land Rover with temporary tags ran Owens off the road. The driver of Land Rover then fled the scene and abandoned the vehicle nearby still running, according to CBS Chicago.
These alarming circumstances serve as a strong reminder to people involved in a hit and run accident to never try to apprehend the other driver themselves, Slocumb said. “You never know why someone doesn’t stop after a car accident,” Slocumb said. “Don’t try to handle such a situation on your own. You never know what you could be getting yourself into. If you are in a hit and run and are able to seek help, call 911 immediately and give the authorities as much detail about the driver as possible. In a serious hit and run accident, you also should talk to a personal injury attorney who can protect your rights. Whatever the circumstances are surrounding your hit and run accident, we can help. We know what questions to ask to make sure your family receives the compensation and closure you rightfully deserve.”
