Directed by U.K. Helmer Mark Heller and written by Louis Crugnali who also stars in the drama, “The Mulberry Tree” is based on Crugnali’s experiences growing up in Providence, Rhode Island in an Italian-American family and from his job in the state correctional system. The film offers a fly-on-the-wall vantage of the happenstance meeting of Mickey Loren (Crugnali) and Samuel Freeman played by actor Joe Morton (American Gangster, Terminator 2, Speed, John Sayle’s cult favorite Brother From Another Planet) a convicted murderer dying of AIDS whose remaining days in the hospital give him the opportunity for redemption through conversation with the young man about his own family issues. Daniella Alonso (Revolution and Friday Night Lights) plays Morton’s long lost daughter who befriends Mickey and John Fiore (Person of Interest) plays Mickey’s father. “The Mulberry Tree” finds these four characters at a crossroads and through their complex and unlikely relationships find self worth, personal redemption, and the lost ability to love due to dysfunctional damage of their own past tragedies.
The decorated film won Best Feature Film at the Irvine International Film Festival, Harlem International Film Festival and the Jersey Shore Film Festival. Mark Heller was awarded Best Director at the Prescott Film Festival and Louis Crugnali and Daniella Alonso both took home Best Lead Actor/Actress awards at the Harlem International Film Festival. The SoHo Film Festival awarded the film the prestigious Grand Jury Prize and the Charlotte Film Festival bestowed the Audience Award. “The Mulberry Tree” is produced by Russell Gray and Michael DeLiso and is distributed by New Hollywood Entertainment.
