Kilmann Diagnostics (KD) has announced a new package of online courses for conflict management: The Thomas-Kilmann Instrument Package. The TKI Package includes three online courses that provide consultants, trainers, and coaches with expert knowledge for using the TKI assessment with individuals, groups, and organizations: (1) BASIC Training in Conflict Management, (2) GROUP Training in Conflict Management, and (3) ADVANCED Training in Conflict Management. Since this series of recorded courses recommends that clients take the TKI twice (a TKI for “inside the group” and another TKI for “outside the group”), The TKI Package also includes 2 assessments of the Thomas-Kilmann Instrument.

BASIC Training in Conflict Management (an 80-minute course with a 30-page manual) helps facilitators understand the TKI Conflict Model and how to interpret an individual’s TKI Profile. The TKI Conflict Model shows two dimensions: assertiveness (trying to get your own needs met) and cooperativeness (trying to get the other person’s needs met). Different combinations of these two dimensions define five conflict-handling modes: competing, collaborating, compromising, avoiding, and accommodating. The TKI Profile then pinpoints which of these conflict modes a person might be using too much or too little, as compared to a large normative sample. BASIC Training also introduces three additional dimensions on the TKI Conflict Model: the distributive (win-lose) dimension, the protective (lose-lose) dimension, and the integrative (win-win) dimension. Using all these dimensions on the TKI Conflict Model, participants then learn how to interpret their own as well as other people’s “Individual TKI Profiles.”

GROUP Training in Conflict Management (a 3-hour course with a 54-page manual) helps facilitators learn how to develop and interpret the more intricate “Group TKI Profiles.” A group is defined as two or more people who are interconnected through a shared purpose, task, responsibility, or fate. Therefore, a group can be a couple, two business partners, a neighborhood, or a work unit in an organization. Participants are asked to take 2 TKI assessments: the first TKI for how they handle conflict INSIDE their group and a second TKI for how they handle conflict OUTSIDE their group. From the results of these two TKI assessments, participants learn how to develop a Group TKI Profile, which reveals the high and low conflict modes that are being used inside and outside their group. Participants then use this four-fold Group TKI Profile to decipher the effects of their group’s culture, reward system, and leader’s behavior on their conflict-handling behavior inside the group, which might be very different from how they handle conflict outside their group. Lastly, the participants learn to develop specific action recommendations for improving their surrounding systems, enhancing their individual skills for managing conflict, and transferring their conflict management wisdom to other group settings.

ADVANCED Training in Conflict Management (an 8-hour course with a 132-page manual) further brings the TKI assessment into an organizational setting. First, participants learn why their enduring psychological type predisposes them to use some conflict-handling behaviors too much or too little. But with this newfound awareness, participants can learn to compensate for their psychological preferences, so they can choose the right conflict mode to match with the key attributes in the situation. Next, the participants learn about the 10 key principles of group process and the 5 steps of problem management. Lastly, the participants learn how to create a well-functioning Problem Management Organization (PMO), which makes use of all their new knowledge about conflict modes, psychological types, group process, and the steps and errors of problem management.

After taking these three online courses, if participants successfully complete the two Final Exams for GROUP Training and ADVANCED Training in Conflict Management, they receive a special recognition: Certificate in the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument.

The price for The TKI Package is $875. If the online courses and the TKI assessments were purchased separately, the total price would be $1,080.
