These are the same safety and care precautions that everyone should take to protect their eyes, whether they have had LASIK surgery or not.
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) July 26, 2012
The warm summer season brings plenty of sunshine and recreation opportunities and many patients seeking LASIK want to enjoy vacations and activities such as swimming without the irritation and limitations of contact lenses or glasses. Dr. Ashraf, an Atlanta ophthalmologist, advocates LASIK eye surgery during the summer months because clear vision is especially beneficial for athletics and enjoying all that the season has to offer. Dr. Ashraf explains, however, that proper eye care is increasingly important following LASIK procedures in order for patients to heal properly and protect their vision.
“While wearing sunglasses is always important, I inform my patients to wear sunglasses that block at least 99 percent of all UVA and UVB rays,” Dr. Ashraf says. According to various studies, during the first six weeks following eye surgery, UV rays can seriously damage the eyes by reversing the effects of laser eye surgery. This can cause hazy vision and retinal damage, so wearing sunglasses, even in the evening, is extremely important.
Dr. Ashraf encourages all patients to be cautious when engaging in summer sports and activities. He recommends waiting at least one week following surgery before swimming in a pool, and suggests all patients continue to use goggles in order to protect the eyes from irritating chemicals. Patients should avoid natural bodies of water, such as lakes and oceans, for at least two weeks. These water bodies have natural bacteria which can cause eye infections. Patients should also avoid getting sand in their eyes, which can irritate and even scratch the corneas, by wearing sunglasses and hats.
“I want my patients to enjoy the summer. These are the same safety and care precautions that everyone should take to protect their eyes, whether they have had LASIK surgery or not,” says Dr. Ashraf.
