A structured brainstorming approach using a tool like Quality Companion's interactive fishbone is often more effective than free-form discussion for investigating the cause of a problem

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (PRWEB) February 19, 2013

Minitab, the leading provider of software for quality improvement, is offering an online training session on using fishbone diagrams to facilitate structured brainstorming for Lean Six Sigma projects. The hour-long training session will be held on February 26, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. EST (GMT-5:00). Registration is free at http://www.minitab.com/training/web-events/.

Participants will learn how to create and work with the interactive brainstorming tool in Quality Companion by Minitab®, a software package designed to manage improvement projects from start to finish. Session content is drawn from Minitab’s two-day Quality Companion Essentials course.

This structured brainstorming approach is often more effective than free-form discussion for investigating the cause of a problem. It can be used to identify the potential causes for a particular type of defect, as well as the process inputs that contribute to variation in process output.

To help improvement professionals manage Lean Six Sigma and other projects in one application, Quality Companion includes a wealth of other tools. When the brainstorming process concludes, the team can use the information they've already collected in the fishbone diagram to create X (input) and Y (output) variables for process mapping and other steps in their project, without needing to reenter the data.

In addition to the fishbone, Quality Companion includes CT tree and idea map tools for structured brainstorming. It also features a powerful tool for Value Stream Mapping, a Lean Six Sigma technique used to analyze and improve manufacturing, supply chain, service-related, healthcare, software development, or product development processes.

The software also includes templates for more than 100 forms, including FMEA, C&E Matrix, and Project Charter, all of which are easily customized to fit any organization. Quality Companion even offers on-demand guidance, with built-in Coaches that give expert advice from experienced Lean Six Sigma professionals.

When a project ends, Companion maintains the entire project in one easy-to-manage file, making it simple to archive and review in the future.

Quality Companion has been embraced by organizations including Xerox, the U.S. Postal Service and BHP Billiton. A free, 30-day trial version is available at http://www.QualityCompanion.com.
