In the beginning there was the App Store. Apple’s app store paved the way for Google Play (formerly the Android Market) and many other app stores, most prominently the Amazon App Store. In the past, Apple has garnered most of the favor from mobile app developers. This trend came from a number of factors including Apple being first on the scene, the amount of downloads and money being made, and Apple’s strict security policies.
As the market has evolved we have started to see a change in the trend and Apple is now in fierce competition with both Google and Amazon for the top spot. While this competition may not be in the best interest of Apple it is proving to be a windfall for mobile app developers. Mobile app development is becoming a big money industry and developers are going to go where the money is. Smart developers are catching on to the idea that cross platform app development is the best way to make money in growing industry.
Where we are seeing the most growth is on Android powered devices. Much of this is due to Google’s open source policy which makes it easier for developers to get their apps published. It also allows Android users to purchase their apps outside of Google Play. This offers more options to mobile app developers when it comes to publishing their mobile apps and increasing their chances of being noticed. This news doesn’t come as a shock to top tier mobile app developers who have been developing apps for multiple platforms for some time.
Though mobile app developers are already seeing an increase in profits they are poised for another big app boom coming soon. This boom will undoubtedly lead to a need for fresh developers to step in and start creating the next generation of mobile apps. In fact, the U.S. department of labor estimates that almost 300,000 additional app related jobs will be created over the next six years. So where are these jobs coming from?
The battle between mobile app outlets will undoubtedly rage on for as long as these companies remain in business. While the major platforms are sweating their competition mobile app developers are cashing in. In any industry exposure means everything and that goes tenfold for mobile apps. When developers publish their apps on multiple platforms it almost always translates into more dollar signs.
