Macquarie Telecom (ASX: MAQ), Australia’s only integrated Managed Hosting, Cloud and business-only telecommunications company, announced it is the first secure internet gateway provider to sign a head agreement with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry in its capacity as a Lead Agency for the Australian Government’s Lead Agency Internet Gateway program.

The deal represents the first major outsourcing agreement as part of the Australian Government’s Internet Gateway Reduction program initiated by the Australian Government Information Management Office (AGIMO). The objective of the program is to enhance operational efficiency, reliability and improved security. The Internet Gateway Reduction Program affects all Australian Government agencies that are governed by the Financial Management and Accountability Act 1997 (FMA Act) and is aimed at reducing the risk of malicious cyber attacks against government agencies. As part of the program, the Australian Government will reduce the number of internet gateways used by FMA Act agencies from 124 to 8, each of which is administered by a “Lead Agency” representing the Commonwealth on behalf of several other agencies.

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) is the first Lead Agency to sign a head agreement for managed gateway and data services, selecting Macquarie Telecom as the leading Australian owned and operated secure internet gateway provider. DAFF went to market in November 2011 as Lead Agency on behalf of twelve federal government agencies: DAFF; Australian Antarctic Division; Australian Bureau of Meteorology; Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research; Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority; Department of Innovation Industry, Science and Research; Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism; Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population & Communities; Fair Work Australia; Geoscience Australia; Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority; and Wheat Exports Australia.

“Cyber security is a key priority for all Lead Agencies as we seek to consolidate the internet gateways upon which nearly every government body relies to communicate securely with the Australia public,” said Graham Gathercole, CIO – Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

“Macquarie Telecom’s geographically distributed multi-gateway environment provides enhanced cyber security capability and operational resilience,’ he said.

Macquarie Telecom is a recognised specialist in the end-to-end management of secure internet gateway services for the Australian Government since moving into this work in 2003. Some of its existing customers are expected to form part of the consolidated Internet Gateway for which DAFF is acting as Lead Agency.

“Macquarie Telecom’s innovative solution and flexible commercial model, convinced us it was the prime choice as our gateway provider,” said Gathercole. “This is a major milestone for the Internet Gateway Reduction program and provides a strong template for ongoing work with the Defence Signals Directorate to ensure better long-term cyber security for all government agencies.”

Commenting on the agreement, Aidan Tudehope, Managing Director – Hosting, Macquarie Telecom said: “We are delighted to be the first external provider selected by a Lead Agency for this mission-critical work. The head agreement is not only testament to Macquarie Telecom’s experience securely connect government to the outside world, but an indicator of cyber security’s fast-growing importance for the government sector. With plans underway to significantly enhance our security investments in Canberra as part of the Gateway Consolidation program, we look forward to progressing our partnership with the DAFF and the broader range of government agencies.”
