There’s always something fun and exciting happening somewhere in New York City, and of course the month of May is bringing so many great events and attractions to NYC. Plan a family vacation before the summer crowds get here, a weekend getaway with mom or a just because trip to check out any of the great things going on this month. This May, some of the most notable events include holidays, concerts, openings and the start of many of New York City’s famous summer festivals and events. Mother’s Day in NYC New York City is the best place to take mom for a mother/daughter getaway, a weekend getaway to treat the mother of your children to something special or a family vacation where everyone can show mom how much she’s appreciated. Go sightseeing in NYC this Mother’s Day, on a self guided walk or bike to all the top attractions, or on a fantastic guided tour of NYC. Many of the tour cruises in NYC are holding a special Mother’s Day Brunch Cruise on Sunday, which includes a great meal, mimosas and a beautiful trip along the Hudson with views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Statue of Liberty and more! Memorial Day Weekend in New York City
The annual Memorial Day Parade will be held on May 27th in remembrance for those who have died in the United States service. On this day, many of the most popular attractions in New York City are open on Memorial Day, so definitely check them out after the parade, along with the other New York City Memorial Day events this year. Unfortunately, Fleet Week has been cancelled for 2013, but many of the other Memorial Day traditions are still going on, including the free concert at St. John the Divine by the NY Philharmonic, the Summer Salute to Heroes at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum and the Memorial Day parade.

Also this weekend, the New York City beaches will open for the season, and the Subway Series will take place. Celebrate what many consider the beginning of summer with summer’s best sport - baseball. The Subway Series consists of the biannual rivalry games between the Mets and the NY Yankees. There are four games between May 27th and May 30th, so catch one while you’re in New York City for Memorial Day. Find tickets for this and all the other baseball games in NYC this season.

NYC Events May 2013
Many people will be celebrating Cinco De Mayo in New York City, participating in pub crawls, attending street fairs, taking advantage of the bar specials and more. That same day (May 5th) is the TD Bank Five Boro Bike Tour, a relaxing 40 mile bike tour, traffic-free, through the five boroughs. This is one of the largest bike events in all of North America, so participate, raise money for charity or grab a seat and spectate. The 3rd annual Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival runs from May 6 - 12 at the Apollo Theatre. Bronx week runs from May 9 - 19, which includes a parade, live music, tours, festivals and the Bronx Walk of Fame, each day celebrating different people and a different fine art. The Rooftop Films Summer Series kicks off May 10th and runs through September 6th. Attend this famous series for a night to see underground films played on rooftops all over NY, generally followed by afterparties with open bars and DJs.

The New York Aquarium is scheduled to partially reopen on May 25th for the first time since hurricane Sandy. That same day, the beaches in New York City will open for the season, and from then on, lifeguards will be on duty daily from 10am-6pm.
NYC street fairs are getting bigger and bigger all month long. Notable street fairs and festivals this month include the Ninth Avenue International Food Festival, now in its 40th year, the Lexington Avenue Festival, the Brighton 5th Street Beach Festival and the Broadway Festival.

Concerts in NYC May 2013
There’s a full lineup of concerts in New York City this month. See Ben Harper at Beacon Theatre on May 3rd, or on May 4th and 5th, see Rihanna & A$AP Rocky at Barclays Center. On May 14th Iron & Wine will be at the Beacon Theatre, followed by The Killers at Madison Square Garden on May 15th. On May 16th, see Paramore at Hammerstein Ballroom. From May 16th to May 18th, Joe Bonamassa will be performing nightly at the Beacon Theatre. From May 17th through May 19th, The Great MoogaGooga is an awesome festival in Prospect Park where you can see the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Flaming Lips and more which enjoying great food and good beer. On May 18th, The Killers will also be performing in NYC at Barclays Center. May 20-26, catch Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers at Beacon Theatre. On May 29, Fall Out Boy will be at Terminal 5. Last but not least, end the month of May with Cee Lo Green, Busta Rhymes & Skylar Gray at Barclays Center on May 31st.

NYC Shows May 2013
Of course many people think of Broadway when they think of shows in New York City, but there are tons of other great show events in NYC playing May 2013. The New York City Ballet Spring Season begins April 30th, and runs through June 9th. The American Ballet Theatre Spring Season at the Metropolitan Opera begins May 13th and runs through July 6th. DanceAfrica puts on very entertaining shows every night from May 19th to 27th. The Big Apple Circus Legendarium is in town from May 19th to June 16th.
