Businesses hire industrial and systems engineers to develop and optimize complex processes, and also to assess the stability, predictability, and consistency of those processes. One of the most common and useful statistical tools for this type of an assessment is the control chart, which can reveal how a process varies over time.
To help industrial and systems engineers attending the Institute of Industrial Engineers Conference understand a probabilistic-based method for constructing control charts for non-normal data, Minitab experts Eduardo Santiago and Joel Smith will present "Control Charts for Non-normal Data with Supplementary Runs Rules" on May 19, 2013 at 12:30 p.m. at the Caribe Hilton. Their talk is part of the Industrial and Systems Engineering Research Conference sessions and will take place during the Quality and Reliability Engineering track.
Santiago, a Minitab technical training specialist, and Smith, a Minitab statistician and senior business development representative, will discuss examples from healthcare, including how the types of control charts mentioned can be applied to monitor the rate of infections and other adverse events.
“The time between events in a Poisson process is exponentially distributed,” says Santiago. “We’ll show how to adapt and apply the supplementary runs rules to identify if the process is out of control, and compare the performance of the proposed charts to existing methods.”
In addition, Santiago and Smith will discuss other models and how their proposed methodology can be generalized. “In our study, we compare the average run length of a stable process before and after applying process shifts of varying magnitudes,” Santiago says.
Minitab representatives will be on hand throughout the conference, as well as during the event’s expo, May 20-22 at the Caribe Hilton in San Juan. Attendees are invited to visit the Minitab booth to learn more about the company’s products and services, which also include training, statistical mentoring and free technical support.
Conference participants can connect with Minitab during the event and keep up-to-date with conference happenings on Twitter.
