Born of a desire to help small businesses and entrepreneurs compete in the local marketplace, Michael Bell and Bradford Kachelhofer opened the doors of The Modern Brand Company on Oct. 15, 2007. The two founders saw a need to help small local, regional, and national companies refine their brands — and their brands’ messages — without the overhead associated with big agencies.
“We started The Modern Brand with the intention of keeping our own overhead low, while offering our small business and non-profit clients a full array of branding and advertising services,” Bell says. “Every client in the world was looking at their bottom line for any place they could find savings — and large ad agencies were one of the easy places to cut.”
“Because of our flexibility,” Bell explains, “The Modern Brand was able to build our business despite the tough economy.”
Over the past five years, The Modern Brand has worked with more than 200 small businesses on a variety of projects, including several dozen start-up companies at the nearby Innovation Depot. The firm recently collaborated with the Jefferson County Health Action Partnership for the two-year, award-winning “Champions for Health” campaign, which aimed to improve the health and well-being of Jefferson County residents.
In 2012, The Modern Brand doubled its office space, which is located on 2nd Avenue North in Birmingham's Entrepreneurial District. The company teams up with freelance graphic artists, designers, writers and consultants on various creative projects. Having extra space enriches those relationships.
To facilitate the agency’s continued growth and to better manage larger projects, Michael Bell earned project management certification (PMP) in September through the Project Management Institute. The structured project management methodology allows The Modern Brand to be more efficient and better manage client budgets and timelines.
In September, Bell was a nominee for the Young Professional of the Year award, part of the Birmingham Business Alliance’s Small Business Awards.
Earlier this year, PR Director Michael Hansen won the inaugural Public Relations Award from the Birmingham chapter of the American Advertising Federation for work associated with the aforementioned “Champions for Health” campaign.
The Modern Brand is also an ardent supporter of many Birmingham causes, donating time and resources to organizations such as the Cultural Alliance, Birmingham AIDS Outreach, The Women’s Fund of Greater Birmingham, Sidewalk Film Festival, and the Hackney Literary Awards this past year alone.
“We are proud to have partnered with local and national non-profit organizations supporting the environment, arts and culture, education, healthy living, food access, community revitalization, and equality,” Kachelhofer says.
