Moving up on the BEAT100 Original Music Video Chart this week, Shekeb Osmani, a native-born Afghani vocalist and producer, presents his original release titled, ‘Ashiqi’, meaning ‘Love’. The song features a beautiful blend of traditional Eastern influenced instrumentation and vocals, sung by Shekeb and collaborating artists, Qais Ulfat and Ghezaal Enayat, combined with Western synths and production techniques. ‘Ashiqi’ has already proved a major hit among BEAT100 users, following the songs reception of a BEAT100 Gold Song and Video Awards, along with a Silver Favorite award. The track’s emotional and soothing lyrics, accompanied by video from the tropical beaches of Goa, India, prove a true winner among BEAT100 fans.
Born in Afghanistan and growing up in Toronto, Shekeb Osmani devoted his youth to studying a combination of both Eastern and Western musical techniques, focusing on his goal to become a professional musician, while learning from a wide variety of teachers. In the process, Shekeb also acquired an interest for musical arrangement, songwriting, production, and mixing and therefore decided to open his own studio in 2001. Today, he owns and operates Saaz Studios, a recording studio located in Toronto and catering to Afghan artists, as well as Middle Eastern and South Asian communities. The studio has proven a major success for Shekeb, as he continues to release productions from high quality musicians originating around the world.
Following his own initial music video releases in 2008, Shekeb has quickly achieved international fame among the Afghan community and beyond. “I’ve been very blessed with winning several prestigious awards within the Afghan community, such as ‘Best New Artist’ and ‘Best Song of the Year’ awards,” says Shekeb, “[Saaz Studios] is already receiving a lot of support from the Afghan community, as our video is the first amongst Afghan artists to have gone mainstream.” His recognition is well deserved, as Shekeb’s talent for maintaining traditional Afghani and Middle Eastern roots while adding a modern Western ‘twist’ to his releases proves irresistible. Moving forward, Shekeb says he will “vigorously search for new ways and avenues to further integrate and innovate traditional styles of Afghan music with Western flavors.”
