New York City officials are calling for an investigation into the recent subway deaths in an effort to curb the number of accidents. According to a Jan. 23 CBS New York report, there have already been six deaths in the city's subway system this year. Although the circumstances of the incidents vary, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer said the rash of fatal subway accidents deserves further investigation as the city is on track for 100 deaths this year, nearly twice as many as last year when 55 fatalities were reported, the report states.
Stringer has called on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to look into possible solutions as well as the feasibility of platform barriers, safety doors, audio warnings and better signage, CBS reports. MTA previously ruled out safety barriers because of the high cost, but officials are now urging the agency to perform an analysis regardless of the hefty price tag, the article states. In response to the recent surge in subway deaths, the Transport Workers Union has launched a campaign asking train operators to slow down as they enter stations although that idea has not received MTA's support, the article states.
It is about time that subway accidents are thoroughly investigated and preventive measures examined, said New York personal injury lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm. "These recent deaths, though unrelated, are tragic. It is important that the MTA analyzes each one of these incidents, how they occurred and how some of them could have been prevented."
Wilhelm said all safety measures must at least be evaluated despite the projected cost of implementation. "How do you put a price on a human life? There are some measures that are going to be more expensive than others. They should nonetheless be explored and studied. If necessary, funding should be obtained to implement those measures. If it can save one life, it will be worth it."
