New York auto accident lawyer David Perecman calls for a thorough investigation of the SUV accident that sent six people, including an 11-month old baby, to the hospital. An out-of-control Chevrolet SUV crashed into them at Fifth Avenue and West 46th Street. The vehicle had jumped the curb at the busy intersection. The pedestrians were in the crosswalk at the time of the accident, reported NBC News (6.8.13).

The baby suffered a head injury and was in critical condition, NBC News said. The adults had non-life threatening injuries.

NBC News reported that it was not clear what caused the driver to lose control. Two possibilities investigators are considering are the rain and hydroplaning. It is expected that no criminal charges will be filed in the accident.

When someone is seriously injured in a car accident as the result of someone else's negligence, it may be possible to hold the negligent party accountable with a civil lawsuit.

“Victims of a car accident may have the ability to seek compensation for injuries caused by a driver’s negligence. Families of those killed in car accidents can maintain a wrongful death suit to compensate them for their loss,” said Perecman.

After a serious accident, auto accident attorneys at The Perecman Firm encourage victims to pursue all possible compensation to maximize awards. Frequently, people find the money helpful as they cope with their injuries. The civil justice system may be the only recourse for family members to seek compensation for injuries caused by a driver’s carelessness.

“Money cannot reverse all accident damages, but it can help victims move forward with their lives by paying for past and future medical bills, lost wages, and other expenses,” said Perecman.

According to the most recent statistics available from the New York City Department of Transportation, pedestrians accounted for 52% of New York City traffic fatalities from 2005-2009. The borough of Manhattan had four times as many pedestrians killed or severely injured per street mile compared to the other four.
