Obituary.us.org will now give people access to birth, marriage and divorce records when they search for public death notices, company officials said yesterday.
“The primary reason people use our site is when they are trying to build their family tree,” a company representative said. “We want to make that as easy as possible for them. If they can find out if the person was married or divorced and get access to their birth certificate information, that will paint a fuller picture for them.”
The company said that seeing if someone was married multiple times can help them discover brand new branches in their family tree.
“They may have had children with a former spouse that the family doesn't talk about anymore,” the official said. “With these records, they will be able to find out and add that to their family tree.”
The birth certificate information will also let people track down the biological parents of their ancestors.
“The truth is that sometimes, the person you thought was the father of your relative really wasn't,” the official said. “Families can tell each other white lies, but birth certificate information tells the truth.”
There will be no additional charge associated with the new information.
“We are just trying to give people the best possible public records package when they pay for a search,” the official said.
