OW2, the global open source community for open source middleware and application platforms launches the Future Internet Software and Services Initiative (FISSi), a joint effort by members of OW2 and non members who develop the technologies that address the specific needs of the Future Internet.
FISSi leverages the service choreography technology developed by CHOReOS, a three years EU-funded R&D project, it complies with key standards implemented by the CHOReOS platform such as OMG/BPMN 2.0 and OMG/SoaML. FISSi will deliver open source code freely available from the OW2 code base.
The technology behind FISSi is the CHOReOS Integrated Development and Runtime Environment (IDRE) and its service choreography approach. It supports, from design to deployment and evolution, a model-driven process for the development and execution of large-scale service choreographies. CHOReOS provides the technical platform to build next-generation, context-aware, ultra-scalable applications for the Future Internet.
Participants who have already committed to FISSi include some 20 commercial and academic organizations from Europe (France, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia and the UK), Brazil and China. The initiative is led by Inria, the French Institute for research in computer science and control.
“With FISSi we are now able to freely share the technologies that will enable the next generation of complex applications for the Internet of the future,” says OW2 CEO Cedric Thomas. “This is an open initiative and we are looking forward to welcoming new participants.” he adds.
The Future Internet is a flexible term that represents the next stage in distributed applications. The 20 billion hosts set to connect to the Internet will not be traditional computers but rather a variety of 'things': cameras, cars, home appliances, health monitoring equipment, home entertainment devices, etc. Services in the Future Internet will rely on new development and execution technologies, smarter objects and smarter infrastructures.
FISSi will be presented on the OW2 booth at CeBIT, Open Source Park, Hall 6, booth # F16, and will be introduced during the conferences, Saturday, March 9, 3:15pm.

CHOReOS “Large Scale Choreographies for the Future Internet“ is a three-year R&D project funded in part by the European Union FP7 programme and developed by a consortium of 16 partners bringing together industry and academic leaders, technology start-ups and open source community expertise. CHOReOS implements a framework for the development and execution of highly scalable choreography-based service-oriented applications. The goal is to enable domain experts to develop decentralized ultra-large scale (ULS) solutions composed of heterogeneous services that are adaptable and QoS (Quality-of-Service) aware.
