As a world renowned therapeutic program for struggling adolescents and young adults, Pacific Quest is proud to lead the way by providing innovative staff development opportunities. Since Pacific Quest’s inception, rites of passage(the intentional, meaningful marking of transition from one place in life to another) have been fundamental to their approach and philosophy. Located on the Big Island of Hawaii, Pacific Quest therapeutic wilderness program has a full-time Rite of Passage Supervisor who works closely with each student during their stay.
The Sustainable GrowthTM philosophy created by Pacific Quest has become the benchmark for therapeutic programs seeking to provide positive life changing experiences that go beyond the client care-provider relationship. The founders of Pacific Quest recognized that in order to most effectively serve troubled teens and struggling young adults, staff and therapists must also have the opportunity to have a personal experience with the rite of passage process. Four times a year, Pacific Quest provides a unique opportunity for employees to participate in a rite of passage vision fast. Founder Mike McKInney adds, "This personal and professional development opportunity enhances the skills and understanding of how to best serve young people confronted with life transitions." Participants in this ceremonial tradition are asked to create an intention, a phrase that represents how they are choosing to lead their lives, or what they aspire to be. Participants work closely with the rites-of-passage supervisor and other guides to prepare for this transition, culminating in a period of self-reflection time where an individual will remain alone for 72 hours, camping near the ocean while fasting. The group then comes together to share their experiences, breaking the fast, and returning to their life and work with a renewed sense of gratitude and personal insight.
