In light of recent temperature fluctuations in Pittsburgh and impending precipitation as winter continues and spring draws closer, Gillece Services promotes waterproofing for home protection and prevention. Gillece Waterproofing helps to protect homes and families in the Pittsburgh area from flooded basements and associated water damage.

Commonly caused by heavy rainfall, flooding can lead to water damage in basements, leaving carpeting, furniture, electronics, and other valuable or personal belongings ruined. Upcoming February and March are prime months for snowmelt in conjunction with heavy rainfall as the season transitions into spring. When snowmelt and rainfall combine, water accumulation may increase drastically, resulting in a high risk of home and basement flooding. Rain can also warm snow and cause it to melt sooner than normal.

Gillece Services provides waterproofing solutions year-round to protect against possible basement flooding and leaks. Waterproofing systems include sump pumps and French drains that direct the flow of water away from a home’s perimeter and collect water that seeps inside. These types of systems, depending on a home’s construction and potential water problems, can benefit a home during late winter and early spring, especially. At a time when snow and rain accumulation, temperature increases, and snowmelt combine, a home may need extra protection to prevent basement flooding and other unwanted water entry.

Sudden, drastic changes in temperature can have a significant impact on the rate and amount of snowmelt. On average, three days of at least 50 degree temperatures can melt two to four inches of snow. It is estimated that each cubic foot of compacted snow contains two to three gallons of water. When temperatures and humidity are high and nighttime temperatures stay above freezing, snow may melt at a much more rapid pace than usual. Pittsburgh recently illustrated this type of weather change when temperatures turned from freezing to the high 60s within a matter of days.

The Pittsburgh region is expected to see more snow accumulation through the remainder of winter, potentially leading to snow buildup that could cause additional snowmelt. Gillece Services recommends learning about waterproofing options and having a system installed before more snow falls, temperatures rise, rain falls, and snowmelt turns to flooding.

Gillece Services is available to conduct a Free Waterproofing Estimate in which a home’s inner and outer grounds are inspected for existing water damage and potential areas of concern. The most effective and suitable waterproofing options for the home are then presented.
