The American Lung Association recently released their annual State of the Air report for 2013, with Pittsburgh landing among the top 25 most polluted cities in the country. While pollution levels were lower than in previous years, Pittsburgh ranked in the top 25 for ozone, short-term, and annual particle pollution. Air pollution is considered a problem outdoors as well as in, and Gillece Services provides Pittsburgh homeowners with products to help improve their indoor air quality.

Gillece provides and installs various air cleaning and purification systems that neutralize allergens and toxic compounds commonly found in indoor air. Whole-house systems work with a home’s furnace or ductwork to capture and eliminate airborne contaminants. High-efficiency filters, HEPA filters, and UVC lamps each work in a concentrated way to reduce indoor air pollution and improve indoor air quality.

UVC lamps provided by Gillece are more effective at killing infectious agents like viruses, bacteria, and fungi. HEPA filtration- High Efficiency Particular Air- is commonly used for indoor allergies, capturing particles such as mold spores, pollen, and dust mites. Likewise, high-efficiency filters, including electrostatic filters, capture small airborne particles by attracting them with an electrical charge. These types of air cleaners are also effective at eliminating Volatile Organic Compounds, which are forms of chemicals like pesticides, paint, and cleaning products commonly found in homes.

Gillece Indoor Air Quality products are especially effective because they capture the smallest of airborne particles that are the most dangerous to breathe both indoors and out. Particles 2.5 microns or smaller are considered inhalation hazards due to their ability to evade mucosal capture, reach the lungs, and potentially travel into the blood stream. Air quality systems provided by Gillece are generally effective at capturing 97% of particles down to .3 microns in size.

Gillece’s efforts to improve indoor air quality in the Pittsburgh area relate to improving the health and wellbeing of those affected by air pollution. Most health risks involve respiratory illness and cardiovascular problems, including associations with lung cancer and heart disease. Allergenic particles can also trigger allergies and asthma year-round and worsen symptoms, especially in children. In addition to city-wide efforts to improve outdoor pollution, air cleaners used indoors can help to control the pollution that affects individuals and families within their homes.
