Millions of Britons are risking gingivitis (gum disease) and more serious medical conditions because they do not brush their teeth every day, warn the manufacturers of Eludril mouthwash and Elgydium toothpaste.
Seven million Britons do not clean their teeth regularly with 14% leaving it 48 hours between brushes, latest data from the British Dental Health Foundation shows.
Some 21 per cent of people polled by the BDHF also admitted that they forgot to floss their teeth.
A spokesperson for Eludril and Elgydium said: “Failing to brush twice a day risks gum disease which can have very serious consequences. It has been linked to heart conditions and cancer.
“Gum disease is fuelled by plaque. If people knew how quickly plaque builds up after a meal and how serious it can be, they would never forget to brush regularly.”
Combating plaque is a never ending battle. Regular brushing is vital to keep plaque at bay because it builds up incessantly.
Plaque is caused by bacteria attaching themselves to the teeth. It starts to harden in two hours. Within 10 days it will have become tough tartar which is much harder to remove.
Regular brushing is vitally important but even the most fastidious oral healthcare regime will not remove every bit of plaque. Some will always remain in difficult to reach places between the teeth.
So it is important to visit the dentist regularly to identify any early signs of gum disease and have the teeth cleaned properly by an oral healthcare professional.
But many people wrongly assume that initial symptoms such as soreness or swelling of the gum are just a temporary problem that will go away in a few days.
Some wait for symptoms such as blood in the mouth before taking any action. By then gingivitis will have been present for some time.
People who continue to ignore the early symptoms of gingivitis may suffer from gum recession.
But despite all the warning signs, many people continue to neglect their teeth and gums, says the British Dental Health Foundation.
Their latest study follows another report which showed that 3.9 billion people in the world – half the global population – experienced oral health issues between the years 1990 and 2010.
There has been a 20% increase in oral health problems over that 10-year period, according to findings of the Global Burden of Disease study.
The research was carried out by Professor Marcenes of the University of London’s Institute of Dentistry. It was published in the Journal of Dental Research.
Dental caries were the most prevalent problem, affecting 35% of the world population. Severe periodontitis – an aggressive form of gum disease – affected 11% of people in the world.
The best known treatment for gingivitis and gum swelling is chlorhexidine.
It is recommended by dental professionals all over the world and has a proven track record that stretches back over several decades.
Chlorhexidine is found in both Eludril mouthwash and the Elgydium toothpaste range.
Elgydium toothpaste should be used daily to help prevent gingivitis. Eludril mouthwash is recommended as a short term treatment when gum disease is detected.

Eludril Mouthwash is an antibacterial and analgesic solution which can be used to manage a number of oral health problems.
Its main use is to treat and prevent dental plaque formation and gum disease (gingivitis, also known as periodontitis) by preventing the build-up of bacteria.
Eludril Mouthwash can also be used to maintain oral hygiene in situations where tooth brushing is difficult, for instance, following oral surgery or in physically or mentally handicapped patients.
Eludril can also be used as a disinfectant for the cleansing of removable dentures and in the management of common mouth ulcers and oral candidiasis infections (fungus infections).
Elgydium Anti-Plaque toothpaste is specially formulated for sensitive gums and helps to prevent dental plaque and tartar build-up, the major causes of tooth decay and gum disease.
Elgydium Whitening, Sensitive and Decay Protection are also available as part of the Elgydium range of toothpastes.
